In many cool-season regions, late summer through early fall offers favorable soil temperatures and reduced weed competition. Spring can also be suitable when soil and moisture conditions allow. The best mixture depends on sunlight, soil conditions, intended use, maintenance expectations, and the amount of traffic the area receives. Measure the length and width of the area and calculate its total square footage. Then compare that figure with the recommended seeding rate listed on the product label or product page. New lawns and overseeding projects may require different application rates.
